How To Fix Excessive BarkingIf you’ve had your dog for awhile, you probably know by now that dogs can act like alarms, by barking whenever they hear a noise or see something that alerts them or is out of the ordinary. Some dogs (especially terriers and poodles) can become chronically excessive barkers unless you teach them to control their barking. Your dogs barking can also become rhythmic. When you command him to stop, he may only stop for a moment before continuing to bark. This can become frustrating for us, which causes us to shout “quiet”.
But this is actually a bad idea.

And here’s why: To your dog, when you shout “Quiet”, you’re just joining in with his barking. This makes him think that it’s fine for him to barking because his owner is also joining in. Here’s the solution: * Go back to teaching your dog the “Speak” and “Quiet” commands. * Have a friend or member of your family do something that causes your dog to bark. Usually ringing or knocking on the door will be enough. * Give your dog the “Quiet” command and reward him when he obeys your command. |
