What To Do About Fear Of NoiseWhen your dog hears a loud noise, his natural reaction is to find somewhere to hide. When an owner sees this, their reaction is to comfort the dog and try to distract him from the noise. This is a problem right here. What most dog owners don’t realize is that comforting your dog in this way can exaggerate your dog’s fear. Your dog will presume that he is right to be scared, otherwise you wouldn’t be comforting him, would you? |

Also, your dog will associate the fear with your soothing words, which your dog may take to mean you’re rewarding him for his fear. Here’s a solution. Make a sound recording of the noise that is scaring your dog. Next: Pick a time when the noise isn’t going to occur naturally (so if he’s scared of thunder, don’t do this exercise in a storm). You then need to play the recording in your dog’s presence. Play the recording quietly at first. Reward your dog for not being nervous. Give him verbal praise and maybe a food reward too.
Gradually increase the volume of the recording over a few weeks. Reward
your dog each time he doesn’t act scared. |
