General Dog Training Tips

In this article, we will cover a few general tips to keep in mind while you’re training your dog.

Body Language
You should learn, understand, and anticipate your dog’s behavior by watching his body language. Only give commands to him when you notice he’s starting to lose some of his concentration, and not after it disobeys you.

Instant Rewards
You must reward your dog as soon as possible as he obeys a command. The quicker he is rewarded for obeying a command, the quicker he will learn that he receives a reward for obeying the command.

Combine food rewards with verbal and physical praise.
Train him like this for awhile, and then give him fewer food rewards. Gradually give him fewer food rewards, but always give either physical or verbal praise.

You can still give him the occasional food reward to keep him on his toes (thinking he might get a food reward next time), but soon enough he will be content with the satisfaction of verbal praise from you.

Here’s some errors you could be making during training:

You should only ever train one dog at a time (unless you have experience in dog training). If you have more than one dog, keep the others out of the way while you train each one separately.

Many dog owners don’t realize that they should only punish their dog if you actually see him misbehaving firsthand. If you act like your angry after the event, the most you’ll ever accomplish is to confuse your dog – he won’t learn what he was doing wrong, and what he should be doing instead.

Good Behavior
Rewarding your dog occasionally is the best, and by far the most effective way, of reinforcing behavior.

Look at it this way: It’s much better to reinforce the good behavior, than punish the bad behavior. Remember this while you train your dog, because it will speed up the whole process dramatically.
