Punishing your dog after he’s had an ‘accident’ only teaches him to be nervous and scared of you. Here’s what you should be doing instead: Anticipate when your dog needs to go. And here’s how: After your dog wakes up, eats, or plays, you should take him to a place that you have chosen for him to relieve himself, and always clean up after him. You can easily avoid accidents in the home by restricting your dog to his crate until you have taken him out to relieve himself in a designated area. As your dog relieves himself, use words like “hurry up”, then praise him. Soon enough, you’ll be able to give the dog the command of “hurry up”, and he will take it as a signal that he is now allowed to relieve himself where he is. Dogs will always avoid relieving themselves in their own bedding, so you should try to restrict your puppy to his crate if you’re too busy to take him out right now. You must always provide your puppy with something interesting, such as a toy, to chew when you leave him in his crate for any length of time. Before you buy a crate, make sure it’s going to be the right size, because if it’s too big your puppy might relieve himself while he’s inside it. |
