Tips On Overcoming Your Dogs Separation Anxiety

If your dog lacks confidence, he is much more likely to bark, dig, and destroy things when he’s been left on his own.

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, he will need gentle handling.

Problems caused by separation anxiety can take a long time to cure.

Over a few weeks you should increase the periods of separation, but remember to always leave your dog with a toy that you’ve rubbed in your hands so your dog will associate the scent with you.

This will comfort your dog when you’re not there.

You can check to see when your dog gets bored by leaving him in a room alone for a few minutes with his favorite toy.

After a few minutes, go back into the room and praise him for not showing signs of boredom, such as barking, pacing, or digging at the door.

You should keep repeating this exercise in different rooms and over different periods of time, until your dog can be left alone without sign of anxiety.

Remember: Before you leave you dog alone, you need to give him plenty of mental and physical exercise. Exhausted dogs are less likely to bark, dig, and destroy things.

If it’s possible, you should take your dog with you to your workplace so he can still be with you during the day. This will cut down any separation anxiety your dog may suffer from during the day, which is causing him to misbehave.

If you have to leave your dog alone for long periods of time, you should consider hiring a professional dog walker, or asking a friend to come round and walk your dog for you during the day.

When you leave your home you should draw the curtains and leave a radio on. This will cover outdoor noises that might startle your dog and make him bark.

Remember: Even well-behaved dogs can have separation problems in new homes. Bare this in mind if your dog suffers from separation anxiety.
